Impromptu Trip

Meeting great-grandma VanFarowe

Cousin Syd with cousin Amelia, Cousin Peyton with Anja (4 of the 6 granddaughters on the Koning side)

Great Grandma Koning and Anja

Kyper learned how to ride his bike--same bike Joel rode when he was little.

The above pictures are from our impromptu visit to Holland.  Anja got to meet all her great-grandparents and many of her aunts, uncles and cousins.  She just needs to meet her Uncle JP and Aunt Katie and cousin James who live in Virginia.  She also needs to meet her cousin Mariah--who was busy with school and work while we were in Holland--Mariah hopes to come out to visit us for a few days sometime this summer and we hope to get out to Holland for her graduation and/or open house.

Our Latest Adventure

When Kyper was 7 days old, the three of us moved from Des Moines, IA to Detroit, MI.  It was quite an adventure, one I was happy not to repeat with little Anja.  I was so excited to take a baby home to a house we have lived in for almost a year and not one I hadn't seen at all.  Well, I guess Anja needed to go on an adventure with us as well.

We came home from the hospital on Monday night.  Wednesday morning, I went downstairs to get something from our pantry.  We have a rug at the bottom of the stairs and when I put my foot on the rug, I discovered that 90% of the basement was wet.  It hadn't rained at all, so the water came from our drain.  Along with the water came food remains and an awful stench.  Oh, joy!

Fortunately, we do not own the house, so we called our landlord, Matt, right away and he made work of getting Mr. Rooter over to our house.  We along with Matt hoped that all the drain needed was to be snaked.  Matt said they had to have the drain snaked once a year due to the age of the pipes and the fact that we have a huge tree in the backyard.  Mr. Rooter came that afternoon and left about a half hour later after he told us and Matt that he had to come back on Thursday with a jackhammer.  Again, oh joy!

So, they came back on Thursday morning.  Kyper was at daycare and Anja was fast asleep.  They jack-hammered for 10 minutes and then told Joel and Matt that this was a much bigger job than they originally had thought.  They had found mud/clay in the pipe. They had to jackhammer the entire length of the basement and replace the pipe.  However, they didn't want to do it with little kids in the house.  (If it were just Joel and I we probably could have stayed, but due to kids we had to be out o the house when they were doing the work.)  We also were not able to use the kitchen plumbing or washer and dryer during this time.  Fortunately, the pipe was not connected to our septic tank, but smelly rotting food also smells a bit like poo.  This was going to be a 2 day job.  Matt offered to pay for a hotel for us, but we decided instead to go to Holland and visit family who hadn't met Anja.  So, we have gone to Holland and back before Anja was even a week old!  What an adventure.

So, we left the house in a rush. We couldn't do our dishes or the laundry.  Joel had done a lot of cleaning of the basement on Wednesday night.  The water didn't ruin anything because we have learned from friends' experiences to put anything valuable in plastic tubs or off the ground in any basement--no matter if there is a history of flooding or not.  We did however have some sheets and rugs on the floor that did need to be washed.  That unfortunately, we can't do until at least tomorrow night.  We need to make sure the cement is dry before moving the washer and dryer back in place.

Joel's mom is coming on Tuesday for a few days...needless to say we have a list of things she can help us with.  Mainly cleaning and organizing the house after this lovely adventure. :)  Don't worry I am sure she will also get lots of cuddle time with both Kyper and Anja!   Actually, I hope to go to the village with her on Wednesday, so she can experience riding the train and carousel with Kyperman.

Sibling Gifts

Kyper is totally smitten with baby Anja.  He loves to give her kisses and hugs.  He also loves to hold her.  We tried our best to prepare him for her arrival, but I know his world has been rocked.  So far, it seems like he is adjusting to it very well.  Yesterday, he came up to Anja while I was holding her and told her "I love you baby sister."  It made my heart smile when I heard that.  I hope and pray he always feels that way.  One thing we did to help him prepare a little is to take him shopping for a baby gift before her arrival.  He got to pick out a gift for the baby and then we told him he could take it to the hospital when the time came.  He picked out a really cute stuffed lion.

We also decided that since the baby would be taking a lot of mommy's time and she would be getting gifts from other people, she should probably get a gift for her big brother.  I thought about something that Kyper would love and that might be something he could do by himself.   Well, we had a playdate awhile back with a friend and they had a marble run toy from Discovery Toys.  It was a huge hit!  So, that is what we decided to get Kyper from the baby.  He absolutely loves it.  He needs some help to set up different tracks, but once that is done, he plays for a long time with it and does not need our help. This is very nice especially while I am nursing Anja.

More Pictures

This is just going to be a picture post.  Not that the first 4 weren't fun, but we have taken quite afew more the last day or so and I think they are a little better in depicting what she looks like and how Kyper has taken to her. :)

Anja's Grand Entrance

Well, we are now home sweet home with our little girl.  It feels good to be back together with Joel and Kyper.

If you do not want to read or enjoy labor stories feel free to skip most of the reading in this post--I won't go into any gruesome details, just the basics, but I feel I should warn people.

Before going further though, I want to make sure people know how to pronounce our little girl's name.  If we would have spelled it phonetically it probably would have looked like On-ya.  But, we wanted to honor our Dutch ancestry, so we put the J in her name instead of the Y.  We have both heard of the name and it is always started with an A, so no O either.  We also think it has a very pretty look to it (as well as sound).  Also, her middle name is after Joel's mom's side of the family. We got Rose from his mom's maiden name--Rosema.

Like her older brother Anja decided to come early.  She was born 10 days before her due date.  I had gone to the doctor last week Tuesday and there was no progress.  We knew the head was down and engaged, but I wasn't dilated or effaced.  I could have told you the head was down with the pressure I felt and in the way I was beginning to have the pregnancy waddle. :)  I perhaps had a little cramping throughout the week, but nothing to tell me that labor was imminent.  Even on Saturday night as we watched tv and talked to both of our parents, we didn't have any indication of labor starting.  Actually, Joel told his dad that I wasn't feeling anything and it would still be awhile yet.

Joel and I had joked that Sunday the 22nd would be ideal to have the baby for his schedule, but we weren't praying for that specifically.  His director told him that he could have a week off after the baby, and if the baby came on the 22nd, he would get out of a hard week, two nights of call and Saturday rounds.  Then in May he starts his psych rotation, which is an elective and has easy hours.  (He's heard you only work 3 days a week).  But, we wanted a healthy baby and knew the baby would come on his/her own time.  Apparently, she wanted to help daddy out though.

So, I woke up at about 3 am on Sunday morning just feeling the need to pee, which was super typical with being 9 months pregnant.  I headed back up to bed, but felt a cramp.  It wasn't super strong, but it did get me thinking that maybe something was happening and progressing down there and that at my next appointment (which would have been today) I may be dilated a little.  I can't always fall right to back to sleep, so I laid there for a while after the first cramp, felt the baby kick, and right as I started to fall asleep I had another cramp.  I wasn't able to fall asleep the rest of the night due to the cramps/contractions, the baby moving, and the crazy idea that these were getting stronger and closer together and perhaps I was going into labor.  I finally woke Joel up sometime between 5 and 6 and said well, I am not sure I am actually in labor yet, but I don't think this is going to be a May baby.  (With Kyper, I had two nights of this type of thing with the contractions petering out late morning.)  Well, they continued to get stronger, so we decided to text our friends Steve and Corey.  I asked Corey if Steve was home (he travels a ton) and she responded with "Yes, are you going into labor?"  I told her I thought I might be and we may need them to watch Kyper.  We decided at about 7:30am to have her come at 8 to pick him up and if nothing else, may we could rest at home.  But, she came a little after 8 and the contractions were getting stronger, so we went to the hospital right after she came to get Kyper.  I still wasn't sure they would keep me, I didn't have any other symptoms (I really didn't have any spotting and my water hadn't brokem).  We made it to the triage room and told them why we came in and I think the resident thought that I wasn't really in labor when I told her the only reason we came in were the contractions.  She told us, "Well, I'll check to see if you are dilated and then check an hour later to see if there is any progress."  She checked and was quite surprised that I was already 4cm dilated and in active labor.  They got some IV fluids in me right away, so I could get an epidural and then moved me to a room.  This was at 9/9:30am.  I got an epidural around 10/10:30.  Soon after I got my epidural, I felt my water break.  I think around 12 I told them I felt a lot of pressure.  Joel said that I started pushing at 12:15 and she was born at 12:20.  So, I had a very short and fast labor/delivery.

So, at 12:20pm on April 22 our little girl made her grand entrance.  To be honest, I am surprised the baby was a she.  I had thought girl initially in my pregnancy, but I think at the end I had the gut feeling of boy.  We are so excited to have a little girl  and Joel had kind of thought the babe was a girl all along.  We still can't believe that she came the very day that we joked would be the best for our schedule.  God is good!

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to our sweet little girl!  Anja Rose was born at 12:20pm on 4/22/12.  She weighed 7 lbs, 5 oz and was 19 1/2 inches long.

She has quite a bit of dark hair. Mommy and baby are doing well.  Mommy, daddy and big brother are all very excited and think she is perfect.

We are Ready

Well, the nursery is done!  So, we are all set for Baby Tator Tot to come. :)

Here are some pictures of the room.

We bought a bedding set for Kyper, but since you aren't suppose to use blankets and the bumper in the crib they became decorations.  As you can see the quilt became a wall hanging.  A friend from church made the bumper into valances for the windows.
