Swimming with the Big Boys

My parents came out this past weekend for Saturday and Sunday. It was good to see them. We went to Ikea and to Ann Arbor for an early supper. They got a hotel for Saturday night, so we went to hang out there on Saturday. We had hoped for some time in the hot tub, but they did not have one, so we just went swimming. We means all five of us! Yes, Kyper got to go swimming with the big boys and girls. :) Here he is:

This is him after he got all dried off with Grandpa. He loves Grandpa Koning. He was having a good night.

Finally, one last picture to show you how big he has gotten.

Rearranged

I had a revelation the other night while laying in bed. "What if we switched our bedroom and office?"

Well, we tried it and found success. On Friday night, I convinced Joel to help me rearrange/switch the two rooms. I know--pretty lame Friday night huh?

Well, here are the before shots:
The Bedroom

The Closet/Office
The after shots: (sorry it isn't the best lighting, but you get the idea.)

The office or as I like to call it now our den.

Our Bedroom
If you remember from a previous post last August, we have a three bedroom house. The thing is to get to the third room you have to go through the second room. We originally had our bed in the second room and used the third room as a giant closet and office area. I really like the new setup for a few reasons. First, I never really realized it until we moved our bed, but our bed seemed to be in a hallway. Now, I feel like we have an actual bedroom. Second, Joel used the office room to study, but really that room was unused for anything else except storage.
The more I thought about it since our bedroom was on the way to the office it probably wouldn't get used. Now, I feel like we use the space better. Along with that point comes my third reason. Third, there is more room for Kyper to play in our home. Before, we just had a small living room and his bedroom. Now, he can also go in that room and has a little more floor space to play on/explore. I don't think he would have ever played in the office before. Finally, we have more floor space this way. We had all the dressers in the third room and just our bed in the second room. Now, we have a dresser and a bed in our bedroom and the rest of the furniture in the second room. So, we have more floor space, because we have the furniture more spread out between the rooms.

Peek-a-Boo

Kyper learned a new game this week. Enjoy.

This video is of Dad and Kyper playing Peek-a-Boo. Except that Kyper needed to make sure he always had one eye on the camera though. :)

Here is take two. Kyper wasn't as interested in the video camera this time.

Kyperman's Adventure in the Snow

We finally got enough snow here to have a little fun. We bundled Kyperman up and decided to show him the snow. Here are some pictures.
Dad needed to help Kyperman a little to make a beautiful snow angel.
He's on the hood of Joel's car. Looks like he's having fun!
Dad and Kyperman had to have some cuddle time after their adventures in the snow! (I think Dad looks more worn out than Kyperman--it may have something to do with him working 5 13 hour shifts at night this week.)

Joel's Rotations

I thought I would give a quick update on Joel and his rotations. To date he has done the following:
1. Psych
2. Family Practice (2 of these)
3. GI (gastro-intestinal)
4. Radiology
5. Anesthesiology
6. Internal Medicine

He is currently in OB/Gyn. He told me the other day that if all he had to do was deliver babies--non-complicated births--he'd go for this field. But, he doesn't want to do the rest--all the surgeries that go along with this and all the complications that happen.)

Yesterday, he got to deliver his first baby! He was pretty surprised that the attending doctor let him. He got to suction the baby's nose and mouth and then put the baby on the mom and carry the baby to the warmer. He came home and was very excited. About this experience, he said, "It was so cool knowing that I was the first person to hold a new life." See, if he could have that experience only he'd go into OB/Gyn--but OB/gyn is a lot more than that. But, I am so excited for him in this rotation for the reason he stated above. I admit, I am a little jealous of Joel this week in regards to seeing new babies. I think birth is so amazing! I used to be really nervous about it, but since I had my own I am not anymore. I am still not a blood and guts person, but to me pregnancy and birth is just so awesome and I like hearing birth stories and sharing mine when asked about it.

Here is his rotation schedule through the end of June/beginning of July
1. Ob/Gyn (current)
2. Neurology (this is an area he is thinking about focusing for residency--we'll see once if that stays the same or not.)
3. Peds
4. ER
5. Surgery
6. Palliative Care (in Grand Rapids)

I can't believe he is about half way done with his rotations for third year. I can now say that Joel will graduate next year--2011! :)

Adventures with Bread

Joel and I made cheese broccoli soup a while back and froze some of it. I decided that we would have that for dinner the other night and also thought it would be really cool to make a bread bowl with it. Since, I am home I decided to try to attempt to make bread bowls. I found a recipe online that looked pretty straightforward. Therefore, I set out to do it.

I figured out how much yeast to use (we didn't have packets, instead I had a package from Aren and Leah from Honduras). I also cut the recipe in fourths, since I wanted to make just two bread bowls and the original was for 8--way too much for us. The sweet thing is that the recipe I found allowed me to type in how many servings it wanted and it did all the conversions for me.

Well, the first attempt failed. Here are the bread discs I made: (They tasted alright, just were flat and a little too dense.)
I needed to go to the post office, so I decided that I would also stop by the store and get more yeast. Our package from Aren and Leah is close to gone, so it was on our list anyway. I also wondered if I did put enough yeast in the first batch, so I thought with a pre-measured packet it may work out. (Plus, pizza is on the menu this week--we make our own crust.) Well, it was 4:30 and I wasn't sure Joel was going to be home soon, so I decided to attempt again. This time I made enough dough for 4 servings and I could use one yeast package and not question that aspect. Well, after waiting 1 hour and 10 minutes this batch also did not rise. However, I had more dough, so I was able to bake them like balls. We were able to make bread bowls with this batch, but you really didn't want to eat the inside--doughy and dense. But as you can see it at least looked cool and the outside of the bowls were good, so we dipped that into the soup.

(It actually was probably healthier for us that it failed--then we didn't eat all the carbs since we threw the majority of the bowl away after having our soup.)
