Adventures in Ferndale

So after many exhausting days of traveling and visiting families we arrived at our home on Saturday. Not that we didn't have fun introducing Kyper to family, but I was ready to be home. Joel moved out things to our rental home in Detroit early July, so he had seen the house, but I hadn't. All I had was some pictures to go from. We are still settling in. I think we have done pretty good considering we have a newborn. I am thankful that Joel's brother and sister-in-law are coming for the weekend--we are going to put them to work. My hope is we can have the house organized before Joel starts rotations on Monday. Otherwise, I have a fear that it will not get done until he is on a vacation--which is a long time from now. Debbi requested more pictures and I know my family wants some more too. So, without further ado I give you Kyper's first days in Ferndale.

Kyper fast asleep in Dad's arms.

Kyper is about the size of the bear Joel gave me for our very first Christmas together (we are talking 9 years ago!) Actually, if Kyper wouldn't be swaddled, Kyper is longer than the bear. But, look the bear's head is bigger.

Family Photo Session!
Before Joel starts his first rotation--psych--he needs to read some. So, Kyper decided to join him or maybe I should say we thought it may put him to sleep. :)
Kyper took his first trip to Meijers the other day. He also went to the doctor today. He is now 20 inches tall and 6 lbs, 14 oz. Whoohoo. He must be getting what he needs, since he is over his birth weight now. :) He is really a very good baby. He still sleeps the majority of the day, but he is starting to have more awake and alert times after he eats. God is really good. He gave us a very good baby. He must have known that Joel and I had enough stress to add a very fussy and colicky baby to the mix. So far (and we are praying this continues) Kyper goes to bed around 11:30-midnight and sleeps until 3:30-4:30am. He eats and then goes back to bed until 7 or 8am. Needless to say, we are thankful. I know we will have tough nights, but it is nice to start out on this note.

I need to take some time to talk about Joel. I knew when I married him that Joel would be an amazing husband and an amazing father someday and I was right. Joel is a rock star dad! He has been the best and I am sure he will continue to be. He has been so helpful with everything. Although, he joked that he was not going to change any diapers--he has probably changed the majority of them so far. He gets up at night and does the diaper changes before I feed Kyper. He is amazing! I am sure this will change once he starts rotations--believe me I understand why. Although, I have learned something about Joel since starting this journey called medical school, which is reassuring to me and why I know we can make it through the next two years. He is very good at balancing school with home life! He may not always have a lot of time for us, but he will make time and use the time he does have in a way that helps our relationship and family. This is why I am not worried about the next two years. I know he will do everything he can to make sure he has time for me and Kyper all the while still doing his best in school. He is amazing! People are going to be so blessed to have him as their doctor someday and I am blessed to call him my husband and a dad to my baby boy.

Okay, it is time for Kyper to eat and Joel just put a load of clean laundry by me that should be folded. (Don't worry I have my priorities--laundry and then Kyper right? haha.)

PS If you want our new address please contact me and I can get it to you.

Congrats!

What a post that is not about our baby?! Crazy.

Okay, so I just wanted to give a huge shout out to my husband!!! He is amazing. He took his Step One of boards on June 17. He just got his scores backed and passed! I always knew I married a smarty pants. :)

I love him and am very proud of all the work he has put into the last two years. I am excited to see how he enjoys the next two. Everyone can pray for Joel (well really all of us) as he starts his 3rd year rotations on August 3. First month is psych. Should be interesting.

I can't believe we are half way through medical school!

Again, congrats Joel! And, I am proud of you and love you!

(PS: not only is he a smarty pants, he is also an amazing father!)

Fun, Family, and Friends

Here are some more pictures of our trip to Holland.

Kyper meeting Great Grandma Van FaroweKyper meeting Aunt Susan and his cousins Peyton and Sydney.
Meeting Erin and Lucy.
His first visit to the beach! Touching his toes to Lake Michigan! (He's only 10 days old here!)
The only pictures I have of Kyper meeting my side of the family is with Great Grandma Van Farowe and Susan. He met almost all of my siblings and his cousins. Also, he got to meet all the extended Van Farowe family on Friday night. Then Saturday morning we had a brunch and he met Great Grandma Phillips, some of Joel's extended Phillips family and Rosema family. He has yet to meet his Uncle Jeff (and Jeff's girlfriend Jen), and his Uncle JP and Aunt Katie. (JP and Katie are coming this Thursday to visit!! Hurray!)

We made it safely to Detroit and are still in the process of unpacking boxes. I feel like I unpacked and settled a lot faster in my last couple moves, but then again I didn't have a newborn. :) We went to church on Sunday and it felt so good fo multiple reasons. We loved seeing old friends and it was good to get away from boxes for a bit. Hopefully, we will be all unpacked by the time Joel goes to rotations--this coming Monday! (What am I going to do without him home all day?!)

Okay, I need to take a break before Kyper is hungry again. :)

Meeting some more family

So, before heading to Detroit we decided to spend two and a half days in Holland. This way more family could meet Kyper. Here are some pictures to enjoy:

Okay, I realize this doesn't have any other family members in it, but isn't this an absolutely adorable picture!!! Aunt Leah knit Kyper this cute blueberry hat.

He is going to be meeting more family tomorrow at my parent's house. I can't wait for my siblings to meet him and his cousins. I am sure we will be posting some pictures of these meetings as well. He is going to be well loved for sure! :)

Kyper's Entrance

So, I thought I would share a little more about Kyper's entrance into this world.

As many of you know, I was stressed out when we found out this winter that we were moving to Detroit. Part of it was moving stressed me out, but the majority of my stress came from the fact that our baby was due July 23 and Joel had to be in Detroit to start rotations by August 3. What a time crunch!

Well, with the help of family and friends we were able to move most of our stuff out there earlier in July. So, that part was taken care of. Now, all we had to do was wait until our baby came. We had been talking to our doctor about the possibility of inducing, because of the move. I really hated the idea to be induced for multiple reasons. First, I heard that induction causes harder and longer labor. Second, I don't like the idea of inducing for convenience's sake. Third, I knew that I would be more anxious about the labor and delivery part if I scheduled it. How would I be able to sleep the night before?! Finally, it is very weird to me to think that I could choose my baby's birthday. So, I recruited many people to pray that an induction would not be necessary and that our baby would be born early and healthy.

Well, I am here to say that God is good and his timing is always perfect! Early Sunday morning, I started feeling some contractions. I woke Joel up at 4:00am and told him. The contractions weren't too close together or intense yet, but we did decide to skip church just in case. Well, we could have gone to church. The contractions stopped by 9:30am. I had a few throughout the day, but nothing too bad. The same thing happened Monday morning. They were a little stronger than Sunday's but still not bad. I could talk through them. They did last a bit longer and I decided not to go into work that morning. Again, I probably could have gone to work all day. They ended by about noon, so I did go into work Monday afternoon. (Good thing, since I had a few loose ends to tie up.) I did talk to the OB-nurse on Monday and told her what happened. Plus, I talked to my sister and mom. They all confirmed that I probably just was experiencing some false labor. While on the phone to the OB-nurse, I did schedule an induction for Friday, July 17. Seeing as it is Friday today and I have a beautiful baby sleeping beside me I did not need to schedule that induction after all. I had more contractions on Tuesday morning. Except these were harder and they started getting closer together. They started around 11:30 and I woke Joel up about 4 am again. We still weren't sure if they were the real thing. Around 6:30am, Joel prayed that God would show us if we needed to go into the hospital. He first asked generally and then decided to ask for something more specific. His request: let the next three contractions Julie feels be just around five minutes apart. Well, they were. So, Joel said I think we need to go. I agreed. Although, we both we pretty sure we may get sent home. I even took jeans along to change into, so I could go right to the hospital to work. We got to the hospital and got checked in. The nurse examined me and told us the good news. I was four centimeters dilated and we weren't going anywhere! We were going to have the baby today.

Some information about the labor. I elected to have an epidural and I was fortunate to be able to get one very soon after I got there--probably around 9 am. The doctor that administered the epidural was very nice--once he found out Joel was a student they talked shop for a bit. (This was after he first told Joel that he preferred Joel to sit in front of me and make sure I was okay.) The epidural did the trick. I hardly felt any of the contractions--however it missed a spot in my right leg, so I could still feel some of the pain and pressure of the contractions. Right before 2 pm, they did start a very small amount of pitocin just to get the labor moving. By the time 2:00pm rolled around I was 10 centimeters dilated and it was time to push. I could still feel the pressure, so that was good in the sense that it helped me know where and when to push. I was told not to tell other moms this, but I only pushed for a half hour (it seemed longer and harder to me.) So, at 2:34 Kyper Simon entered this world.

There you have it. Kyper's entrance into this world. God has truly blessed us with a beautiful son and it was perfect timing. I really shouldn't have been stressed out about the timing. I knew God would provide. His timing is always perfect! Kyper was born nine days early on his own time. An induction was not necessary and Kyper is a healthy baby boy. We now have a little more time that we can spend in Des Moines, so friends here can see him and say good-bye. We aren't as rushed to get to Detroit either, so we hope to stay a few nights in Holland to introduce Kyper to his great grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles. Then we can get to Detroit and still feel like we have a little time to adjust before Joel starts rotations.

Prayers are still requested though. Pray that Kyper will stay healthy and strong and that he will learn how to nurse--he is doing well, but lets face it we are now making him work hard to get food, so it will take some time to get it right. :) Pray that traveling goes well and that we all stay safe. Pray that Joel and I adjust to being parents and that we work well together. Pray that we can get into somewhat of a schedule--knowing that it will change once Joel starts rotations. Pray that we are good parents and provide for Kyper. We love this boy to death. If you ask me this is the really hard part. I had a wonderfully healthy pregnancy and now I have to be a mom. Pray that I feel capable and that I can do it and not get really anxious about the daunting task. Pray that we stay dependent on God for help. Pray that Kyper grows to know and love Jesus and that we show him this through our words and actions. Also, I am quite afraid of postpartum depression due to all the changes we are in the next two to three weeks, so pray that if it happens I recognize and am willing to get help or that I don't get it at all and just get the typical baby blues. I am sure there are other prayers I could ask for, but those are the major ones.

Thank you to all you prayer warriors. We couldn't have gotten this far without you and I know we can't make it without all of your prayers, support and encouragement! I don't know what we would do without this community of friends and family.

Introducing...

Kyper Simon Phillips
Born at 2:34 pm on July 14
6 lbs and 8.3 oz.
18.5 inches long
Has a little dark hair
We love everything about him!

I am sure there will be more pictures to come and more of the story.

One story I do want to tell is how he got his name. We chose it early on in the pregnancy. Kyper comes from the Dutch Theologian Abraham Kuyper (We took out the u, to make it more like a first name and so people could pronounce it better). Simon is my paternal grandfather's first name. Hence, Kyper Simon.

Our Trip to Michigan

After taking his test Joel was ready for a vacation, so we headed to Michigan. (I had one more week before I couldn't travel too far from Des Moines.) We decided to hit up Big Star Lake (my grandparent's cottage) first. It was my family's week. Over the weekend though it was just my brother's family and Joel and I. It was a lot of fun. (I hope you can read the captions on the pictures.)

(Joel caught a garter snake and man it was a hit with Peyton!)
We ended up being in Michigan for Joel's birthday. So, his mom made a delicious birthday dinner--kabobs! Joel got his favorite: shrimp and scallops. His other birthday wish was to go to the beach for the sunset.

We got to hang out with Scott and Stephanie one night at Oval Beach. It was fun. We took the kayak and played around on that. Joel also went sailing that day. Although it may look like it, I did not go. I went when they were prepping the boat, so Joel could get a picture of me on it. We also wanted to take a picture of one of the many roads washed out by the major rain/thunderstorm that they got the first night we were in Michigan. We ended the evening at Aren and Leah's and got an updated picture of Henry meeting Blueberry. :)The pictures below are from our car ride back to Des Moines. We took it really easy and decided to stop at the Amana Colonies to check something else off our Iowa bucket list. It was fun. We had a late lunch and then Joel was able to take some pictures of a barn, countryside, and hay bales.

Catch-up: Des Moines Shower(s)

Yes, we have had some rain, but not like last year. I know Michigan got some major rain when we were in town in June. Lots of flooding!

Oh, did you think this whole post was going to be all about rain showers...nope. I have had two baby showers here in Des Moines. The first one was thrown by some friends--church and DMU friends. It was a lot of fun. Here are some pictures (thanks to Monique who was the photographer for the morning.):

AM and Brandie--the planners. We had lots of good food.

Thanks for all the wonderful items! All of them will come in handy once Blueberry comes out!

The bought a beautiful orange (my favorite color) gerber daisy for a table decoration.Genevieve, AM, and Laura taste testing baby food. Yummy.

The second shower was a joint work one for my co-worker who was due a week ahead of me. We were due a week apart. My co-worker already had her baby. She was induced for medical reasons at 37 weeks. Her daughter is beautiful, but does need some prayers. I am not sure on any specifics, so just pray. (That I know of she is still in the NICU and was born July 1.) Here are some pictures from that shower:

The fun cake they got for us.

The gift that Anawim Housing gave to Blueberry. THANKS!

Catch-up: Memorial Day

While Joel was hard at work studying for his boards, I decided to fly to Michigan to spend time with family over Memorial Day Weekend.
I had a lot of fun there. Some highlights included:
1. A Phillips family baby shower. A huge thank you goes out to Joel's mom who hosted it. She put a lot of work into it and it was a lot of fun. It was neat, because I got to see an old college frined, Becky, who I hadn't seen in years. She happened to be in town for her brother's graduation. My niece Peyton was also very fun to have at the party, because she kept asking people where the baby was. She was very confused because there was no baby, but we all kept talking about the baby and the presents for the baby. We had to repeatedly tell her that the baby was still in my tummy and soon she would have another cousin to play with.
2. The annual Memorial Day Breakfast at the beach with the Rosema family and friends occured. We had good food and good times. It was a beautiful morning at the beach. We walked out to the end of the pier and waved hello to Joel via the webcam!
3. Joel's older brother and sister-in-law were in town from VA. We don't get to see them often, so it was great to see them.
4. Joel's cousins just had a new baby. So, we got to meet little Weston! He is a cutie!
5. I got to spend time with my grandparents, parents, and siblings. It was really nice to see my younger borther before he headed to WI for the summer.
Here are a few pictures from the trip:
